    Sanford and Scott's
    'Junior Latin Reader'

Sanford and Scott's reader would be accessible for a student who had completed the Adler course - re-telling famous stories from myth and legend, such as the story of Perseus,Hercules and Jason - followed by a simple Roman History reader,it is pleasant to listen to, and would benefit even a more advanced student. Listening to easy Latin is a great way to move towards fluency, which can only be achieved by extensive audio and oral exercise

Appleton and Jones'  'Puer Romanus'.

Appleton's reader is suitable for a 21st century intermediate student of Latin, although even a beginner will benefit from extended oral input in the language. The reader is in the form of a novella, told from the perspective of a young Brundisian boy, called Lucius. This books is justifiably famous - and remains one of a handful of such texts ever written.

John Amos Comenius' 'Vestibulum to the Latin Language'.

This text is a pleasant introduction to the Latin language, and would also benefit more experienced students, who may have a very limited range of vocabulary.
The Vestibulum gives an essential foundation in the core root words of Latin, enough to begin to start to speak about some things, and to read a variety of very simple texts. The Romans themselves used simple dialogues and fables to teach their children, or foreigners ( we have textbooks from the second century for teaching Latin to Greeks) - so throwing out this model, an eminently sensible one of slowly increasing complexity of the texts, aiming at fluency in 5 to 6 years - has lead to an entire generation being unable to read Latin without translating it into the vernacular in their heads, and poorly equipped to express themselves in the language. Comenius' Vestibulum imitates these ancient Roman educational texts, as do his grammar texts, which are written in a pleasant , clear and light-hearted Latin style.
The Vestibulum contains a vocabulary of 1000 root words.

John Taylor's  Caesar for Beginners. (Book I, The Helvetic War)
The publishers to the new University College, London, in the mid 1800's embarked on a new series of Latin texts, following the plan outlined by the philosopher John Locke.
This particular edition of Caesar is unique, and no other Latin text has been issued since this date, using the serial and oral method. This method teaches grammar intuitively, through the deconstructed text of Caesar, which is built up line by line, each new line only introducing one new lexical item, or one new grammatical point, which is highlighted in the Latin and in the translation with italic font. This is a most valuable text for the beginning student of the Roman Classics.

'Imaginum Vocabularium Latinum'  Edition 6 Feb 2012.

The Imaginum Vocabularium Latinum was originally created in 2007 for Molendinarius' personal use - it is an illustrated vocabulary of over 3300 items, and has its core source  a nineteeenth century word list covering a selection of topics. This has been supplemented with more modern material drawn from a variety of lexical sources. The included image files cover the following topics: army, birds, boats, the body , buildings, clothes, Comenius (illustrated phrases from the Orbis Sensualium Pictus), containers, education, entertainments, fabrics, farming, foods, fruits, furniture, geography, geology, insects, law, mammals, marine life, measurements, money, plants, religion, reptiles, science, society, speech, sport, time, tools, tradesmen, vehicles, verbs, weather. The idea for creating this resource came from 'The Green Book of Language Revitalization in Practice'.(These image files include labelled photos of all body parts - so, please look over this material before use with a young student. You can easily delete or move an image elsewhere, or create subcategories, once you have downloaded them). Turn them into a slideshow as a fun way to learn vocabulary.

'Pretty Lessons in Verse'

Sara Coleridge, sister of the celebrated poet, has written a lovely collection of poems for teaching Latin, addressed to dear Henry and Edith, the children. I suppose her brother had a hand in these delightful verses as well, which make learning a foundational Latin vocabulary a little bit easier. Read as an audiobook by Molendinarius.

John Amos Comenius composed his "Orbis Sensualium Pictus" (The Visible World in Pictures) as a first primer and introductory schoolbook.

He believed the teacher should use visual aids, and, where possible, actual physical models. The curriculum should be wide ranging, and cover all the main areas of everyday life as it was experienced by his students. He does not sanitize the harshness of the world.

Thus all the items mentioned in the text are referenced with numbers to engravings, that are positioned alongside the text.

His young students would find out about the world, and all the main ideas that people had about it, in a simplified form - astronomy, climatology, zoology, botany, human anatomy, philosophy, geography, geometry, musical instruments, warfare, politics, jurisprudence -a student studying this book will accomplish two things - they will build up a vocabulary of a few thousand Latin words, acquire a knowledge of simple grammatical structures ( the sentences are all relatively simple) and in addition, gain an insight into the world, as it was understood by a Protestant Renaissance scholar in the mid 1600's. The Orbis Pictus is recorded carefully in restored Classical Pronunciation, chapter by chapter, and the pdf of the edition used is included on the DVD. This text, despite its advanced age, is still suitable for use by young students.  The text used here is the first American edition of 1810.  This textbook is one of the most famous pedagogical texts ever written. Comenius' Orbis Sensualium Pictus was also the first ever illustrated children's book - and as such, occupies a unique and important place in the history of education.A small amount of this material is on the podcast, however the complete reading of the text, with each phrase read twice in Latin and once in English,  is only available on this DVD.

Coming Soon - Heyne's translation of the Rosetta Stone text into Latin

Nutting's "De America". This interesting series of historical stories ( broken into 100 episodes) is composed in relatively simple Latin. It chronicles the period from Christopher Columbus until the founding of the American Republic. Conceived of as a reader introductory to Caesar, the series focuses on  the period of discovery, and then on battles between the settlers and the Native Americans, and between the American colonists and the British, interspersed with individual tales of the trials of life during this interesting period of history. Occasional discursions are made when a comparison with Roman history seems apt. This is not a dry re-telling of history, but is a carefully crafted and delightful series of stories, that are well enough written that they bear listening to several times. One of the best Latin readers I have yet encountered.

Read in the restored classical pronunciation of Latin by Evan Millner. Recorded in November MMIX.
