More Latin Psalms in Audio

I am nearing the end of the audio recording of the Vulgate Latin Psalms in Classical Pronunciation. It is thought this is the first audio recording of the Vulgate Latin Psalms using the classical system.

Today I uploaded Psalm 108 through to 140. There are ten more to go.

The first sections are already formatted as downloadable zip files; the third tranche should be added by tomorrow or the day after.

You can find this recording and more at Latinum

Once I have completed the Vulgate Psalms I will begin recording Castellion's more classical translation of the Psalms. This will be the first ever audio edition of Castellion.

I also plan to add, in time, other editions of the Latin Psalms.

Friday

Eutropius - Latin Audio paraphrase

Today I completed the recording of chapter 7 of John Stirling's Latin paraphrase of Eutropius.
After working with, and recording a few paraphrases, I am increasingly convinced of their utility as a gateway to fluency - a half way house between student level 'Readers' and the unadulterated classics. This is particularly the case with prose paraphrases of Latin poetry.

A typical chapter of Eutropius takes me about 2 1/2 hours to prepare: firstly, there is the initial silent read through, then the recording. Then, I listen to the recording, and fix any minor errors I come across. Finally I edit the audio to eliminate background noise, and apply a small amount of reverb, edit the metadata, and upload the file to Patreon for your enjoyment.

Adler Latin Audio Course - The Discovery

Way back in 2005, I was trawling google books, looking for a Latin textbook that taught the language as a modern language. I remember clicking through page after page of search results, day after day in my hunt for Latin treasures. .. then one day, on results page 30 or something ( I was persistent) a scan of Adler's Practical Grammar popped up.

Google had just placed it online, with a rather sub standard scan. I got excited. I asked my friends in the academic world if they had ever heard of this amazing book.

No one had. Adler was using a method that was too advanced for his time. His book had fallen into oblivion.

Only 9 copies of the print version survived in libraries scattered across the world. I borrowed the British Library's copy. I saw immediately that this book would make a fantastic Pimsleur type audio course. And so the Latinum Project was born.

Adler is now well known, as is my Adler Audio course, which took me two years of full time work to produce. www.patreon.com/latinum

Spoken Latin with Latinum - over 350+ hours of quality audio

Do you want to learn to read and speak Latin?

Latinum uses the classical pronunciation of Latin, in line with the recommendation of the Association of Latin Teachers.

Latinum's spoken Latin course has been online since 2006, originally with YouTube and a Podcast; Latinum is now on Patreon, and uses a subscription model.

You can unsubscribe from the service at any time; it only costs a small amount to dip in and try.

Latinum, the home of the Adler Latin audio course, moved its extensive audio catalogue to Patreon on the 14th of April 2017.

Firstly - why Patreon?
Patreon allows me to offer you, for a small monthly subscription (which you are not locked in to - you can cancel at any time), access my entire back catalogue of course material.

Think this is expensive? Check out my Price Comparison page.

What do you get if you become a patron (subscriber) of Latinum?
Every patron (subscriber) can  access and stream hundreds of hours of quality Latin audiobooks and other audio resources from the streaming catalogue, for a very low monthly subscription.

Higher reward tier patrons are offered an incredible deal - the ability to download a large catalogue of audiobooks as zip files.

These include the Adler Audio Course- with over 191 hours of Latin audio resource materials.

WHAT IS THE LATINUM COURSE?

Latinum on Patreon allows me to offer you, for a small monthly subscription (which you are not locked in to - you can cancel at any time),  access to my entire catalogue of course material.

A subscription to Latinum is extremely good value for money. You can cheaply subscribe as a basic level patron, and later, if you don't find it useful, or no longer want to support Latinum, it is very easy to quit.

It is also easy to upgrade to the higher tier later on if you want to download my audiobooks in zip format.

The Latinum Course is an online multi-level and multi-media Latin course, with a growing complement of recorded supplementary material, that has been growing steadily since Evan started creating it  in early 2007.

The core of the course is Adler's  Practical Grammar of the Latin Language - which took Evan der Millner  two years of full-time labour to produce as a stand-alone audio course - vastly expanding the material in an already comprehensive textbook of Latin. If you want to master Latin,  Adler's course as presented by Latinum is all that you will require.
Why an audio course for a dead language?

You need to 'fire on all cylinders' - and to speed up language learning, the dead language has to be treated - for learning purposes - as though it were indeed alive - to help you  make as many neural connections as possible. This must involve reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Few formal Latin courses spend much time on the latter two, which, to my mind, are the most important of the four, especially for a beginner. Also, classroom based language courses simply cannot provide the intensive exposure needed, and the hours of tuition required, to master a language quickly.

What do you get if you become a patron of Latinum? Every patron can freely access and stream  hundreds of hours of a growing corpus of Latin audiobooks and learning materials, either here on the Patreon website, or by using Patreon's Apple or Android app.

Higher reward tier patrons can also  download a large catalogue of audiobooks and other materials as zip files. I have also curated a selection of my YouTube materials - including my 'Latin in Latin' Course, and the 'London Latin Course', both of which I recommend you use alongside Adler

Cornelii Nepotis - Vitae   (Lives) Chapters 1 to 14     3 hours 40 minutes of audio
This reading of Cornelius Nepos' "Lives" covers the first 14 biographies:
2 hours 43 minutes of audo

1. Miltiades.
2. Themistocles.
3. Aristides.
4. Pausanias.
5. Cimon.
6. Lysander.
7. Alcibiades.
8. Thrasybulus.
9. Conon.
10. Dion.
11. Iphicrates.
12. Chabrias.
13. Timotheus.
14. Datames.

Nepos writes in a clear, simple Latin style that has much to recommend it. Catullus praises him highly. These works were written to be read aloud - as were all Roman works - and the authors were careful about how their phrases sounded. Nepos is a brilliant master of this art.

Saturday

Cornelius Nepos - Student's Audio - Hamiltonian

Please visit the main website of LATINUM at
http://latinum.org.uk

This audio recording covers the entire text of Cornelius Nepos lives of the Great Commanders.

Duration: 7 hours 40 minutes
Latin only - to be listened to along with the English pdf text.

Stream or Download this on Patreon

The recording follows the Hamiltonian text, which is an English interlinear text, with the Latin word order slightly adjusted to make a running English translation comprehensible.

The Latin is still grammatical. If your intention is simply to be able to read Latin fluently, there is no problem with this methodology at all. If you intend to become a writer and speaker of Latin, then the less time you spend with the Hamiltonian text, the better - once you have used it to do its job, you should spend a lot of time with Cornelius Nepos' original text, until you have absorbed his unique style.

How to use this material:

Open the pdf to the appropriate chapter, and listen to the recording, while running your eye over the interlinear English translation.

Once you feel you have ironed out all the bumps - in vocabulary, idiomatic language, etc, it will be time to read the original text, which you should now be able to do fluently and with pleasure.
